The Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering is part of the School of Engineering Sciences at KTH. The research at the Department is centered on vehicles and vehicle systems from under water to space. The current positions will be based at the Naval Architecture research group.

Job description

Two Post-Doc positions are available at the department of Aeronautical and Vehicle engineering under the supervision of Prof. Jakob Kuttenkeuler (https://www.kth.se/profile/jakob) and Assistant Professor Ivan Stenius (https://www.kth.se/profile/stenius).

The research is funded by the Swedish Maritime Robotics Center (SMaRC), which was created to promote innovative research in the area of maritime robotics. SMaRC is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, as an Industrial Research Center. The research focus is on three target application areas: ocean production, safeguarding society and environmental monitoring including missions in unexplored polar marine environments. We will develop technologies for increased autonomy and endurance of marine robots (typically denoted AUVs or ROVs) to reduce the reliance on ships and crews, and thereby drastically reduce costs of operation.

SMaRC brings together researchers, specialists and end users from KTH, FOI, SAAB, MMT, Stockholm University and Gothenburg University. KTH (AE and RPL), SAAB and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) will be responsible for most of the technical development. MMT has 40 years experience in underwater operations for ocean production as well as security applications. The Industrial Ecology department at KTH is deeply involved with blue growth projects, such as SEAFARM. The environmental and climate science partners from the University of Gothenburg and Stockholm University require data from hostile regions in the polar oceans which are of acknowledged importance for the global climate system. Finally, SAAB is a major supplier of underwater technologies for both civilian and military applications.

The research for these two Post-Doc positions is focusing on developing test platforms for maritime research robots in primarily two main categories; 1) maritime robots with long range and the potential to navigate in unknown and harsh environments; and 2) small and cost-effective maritime robots designed to perform advanced tasks and maneuvers in reasonably known environments. We are looking for one Post-Doc for each category so please indicate the category that is primarily of interest.

You will participate in building up a completely new research lab and as part of SMaRC you will belong to a multidisciplinary research team collaborating with other Post-Docs and Ph.D.’s from fields such as robotics, underwater communication, electrochemistry, marine ecology & biology and polar science. The demonstrators are jointly developed and custom instrumented by the various research groups to fulfill the needs of the entire SMaRC consortium with a wide set of requirements. The work will hence have a systems engineering flavor and involves a wide range of tasks such as electro/mechanical/hydromechanical design, programming, co-supervision of PhD students, as well as planning of fields tests and writing scientific journal articles. Some teaching may also be part of the appointment. There will be funding for regular traveling to conferences, workshops and field tests (e.g. Baltic Sea, Swedish west coast, Svalbard and Antarctica).

Qualifications

A PhD degree, awarded in Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle engineering mechanics or a related field (e.g. Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Physics) is a requirement. The applicant must have been awarded a PhD degree within the previous three years from the last day of application. Other merits are a relevant degree project, i.e., related to maritime robotics as well as international experience and good English language skills (written and oral). Merits are also good Swedish language skills (oral and writing). The applicant should have a strong interest in applied research and development as well as experimental work. The position requires the ability to work both independently and drive the project forward, and to cooperate in the team. Great value will be placed on personal qualities in the evaluation.
