KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

The doctoral program in Applied and Computational Mathematics has three main directions of study: (i) Mathematical statistics, (ii) Numerical analysis, and (iii) Optimization and systems theory. The position in question here concerns specialization towards optimization and systems theory. Optimization and systems theory are disciplines in applied mathematics in which theory and methods are developed for a broad range of applications in control, logistics, planning, and signal processing. At KTH our research is focused on theory, methods and applications in mobile robotics, networked systems, optimization in radiation therapy, robust control, spectral analysis, and structure optimization. We are affiliated with SSF the funded center for medical imaging and the Linnaeus Center ACCESS. We also have broad international collaboration.

Job description

The aim of the project is to study some fundamental issues regarding cooperative multi-agent systems that are motivated by various types of applications. A common feature of the systems to be studied is that they are all nonlinear systems, thus sensing and control can not be separated. In this project we will study the integration of sensing and control for multi-agent systems. For cooperative multi-agent systems, it is well known that interaction is critical for the collective behavior. In this project we will study how interaction affects emergence that is beyond consensus and how we can shape the emergence via designing the interaction topology. More specifically, the issues to be studied in the proposed project include modeling, analysis and active intervention, in particular feasible cooperative control design under the sensing and interaction constraints for a multi-agent system.

The employment is four years with a possibility of maximum up to five years. Up to 20 percent department duties are included in the employment.

Qualifications

We seek a person with strong background in applied mathematics, in particular with demonstrated good understanding in systems theory and optimization. Knowledge in nonlinear differential equations and differential geometry is meriting. The successful applicant should also be strongly motivated, have the capability to work independently, be able to work in a team and have good communication skills. KTH is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
