Become a part of world-leading research and education! The School of Electrical Engineering is one of ten schools at KTH. We conduct research and education in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Space, Fusion and Plasma Physics. The field of electrical and electronic engineering at KTH is internationally recognized and places high in international rankings. The school is responsible for bachelor and master programs in Electrical Engineering which are closely linked to our research fields. 450 people work together in an international environment in eight departments and in the Dean’s office.

The Automatic Control Lab conducts fundamental research in control, optimization, networked systems, communication systems, systems biology, system identification, and multi-agent systems. A major part of the research is conducted within the ACCESS Linnaeus Centre, Sweden's largest university research center in networked systems, and in EU-projects in collaboration with European industry and universities. We have a large academic network and collaborate with researchers at Caltech, ETH Zurich, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, among others. In the most recent Academic Ranking of World Universities, KTH was ranked as the 12th university world-wide in the area of Automation and Control and in the 3rd place in Europe.

Project description

The successful candidate will join a research group working on fundamental theory and algorithms for large-scale real-time decision-making and control. Current research projects include radio resource allocation for next generation wireless systems, optimization of sustainable infrastructures, and distributed algorithms for large-scale machine learning. The group blends curiosity-driven basic research with applications and collaboration with industry and society.

The PhD student will join the PhD program in Electrical Engineering, which provides world-class quality education, including a large number of graduate courses ensuring an in-depth development of relevant competences and skills.

Qualifications

The successful applicant is expected to hold or to be about to receive an MSc degree in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science or similar. We are looking for an applicant with a strong background and interest in mathematics and algorithms.

The successful applicant should be self-motivated, have an outstanding academic track record, and well-developed analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent command of English, orally and in writing, is essential for publishing and presenting results at international conferences and in international journals.
