Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för Kemivetenskap

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer Technology. It encompasses both fundamental and applied Chemical sciences and seeks sustainable development through scientific excellence. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from Chemistry to Materials science, Environmental science, Biochemistry, Biology and Medicine. The School offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry, Degree Programs in Engineering Chemistry, Technical Preparatory Year and three international master programs: Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, Macromolecular Materials and Molecular Science and Engineering. We also cooperate with the master programs Energy and Environment, Materials Design and Biotechnology.

Department information

The position is in the polymer technology group at the department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, with a very close collaboration with KTH Solid Mechanics.

Job description

A postdoc-position is available in the project ”Engineering 3D printed and knitted degradable scaffolds” financed by Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.

We will in this project design porous, three-dimensional degradable scaffolds for soft tissue engineering. The scaffolds should combine pliability with mechanical rigidity with the aid of for example 3D printing.

The aim for this part in the project is to use the information we have around the possibilities and limitation of the processes, combine it with the properties of the tissue and three-dimensional scaffolds. The design process will integrate a biomechanical assessment of scaffolds using Representative Volume Element (RVE) simulations of the individual 3D designs. Specifically, such assessment aims at predicting macroscopic properties of 3D scaffolds designs to design biomechanics-compatible tissue implants. Material mechanics simulations will also cover the extrusion process of the polymer during the printing process.

The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Qualifications

A suitable academic background would be a PhD in simulation-based Engineering, specialty within material mechanics simulation, computational biomechanics is an asset.

Since the position is directed toward numerical simulation, the candidate need to have good knowledge in Scientific computing concepts like the Finite Element method (FEM), Computations Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the like, as well as in available software like ANSYS, ABAQUS, COMSOL, etc.

The project is dependent upon collaboration between different groups and the applicant should therefore like to collaborate as well as possess the ability to work independently. The applicant needs to be instigating, actuating and strongly motivated to develop new materials for medical applications.

The applicant should have excellent skills in the English language, both spoken and written.
