Sustainable Road Infrastructure

Subject description

The subject includes the development of methods, materials, techniques and knowledge related to sustainable road infrastructure. The focus of the position is partly on the development of new material solutions and partly on the application of new experimental characterization techniques to optimize the current and future road designs. The position will furthermore focus on method development that will enable the integration of novel experimental and computational tools to advance sustainable road-material and structural designs.

Duties

Take a leadership role in the development and performance of experimental and numerical research activities, especially via the supervision of doctoral and master students, own research projects and submission of research proposals for funding. Teaching, course development and student examination within the subject area as well as supervision of thesis projects are expected. Contribute to the development and performance of new courses, especially focused towards sustainability aspects of road infrastructure. Be an ambassador of the subject to raise awareness and interest from industry and international partners.

The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following application, the assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of

the Higher Education Ordinance.

Eligibility

An individual who has obtained a PhD or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications within five years prior to expiration of the application period should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

Grounds of assessment The assessment criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are stated in KTH's appointments procedure section 1.3, and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

 Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • scientific excellence in the subject area
  • ability to take responsibility for her/his own research activities and collaborate with other researchers
  • experience in performance and leading experimental research

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • proven ability to go beyond the subject’s traditional approaches and to work interdisciplinary
  • ability to acquire external research funding
  • qualification to teach in the subject’s area
  • experience in performance and leading numerical research
  • good ability to communicate scientific results in English, both verbally and in writing

It is also important that the applicant has

  • knowledge on diversity and gender issues, with special focus on gender equality
  • documented ability to communicate knowledge and research results to society as a whole
  • experience of research and education from various environments

Special grounds of assessment for promotion to associate professor

When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the applicant's ability to independently initiate and carry out research of high academic quality, published in international journals, and the applicant's ability to obtain financing for research operations will be assessed. Of highest importance is the applicant's ability to independently establish new collaborations and research specializations. It is also of highest importance that the applicant has demonstrated their expertise in teaching and as a supervisor. Finally, also of highest importance is the applicant’s ability to seek and receive external funding.

Time limitation: The appointment is for an indefinite term, but no more than four years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, more time is required to reach the objectives of the appointment. However, the total appointment period may not exceed six years. The appointment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH and the assistant professor may apply for promotion to tenured associate professor.
