Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för teknikvetenskap

Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics span from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, biophysics, mathematical physics, atomic, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear reactor physics, nuclear reactor technology and nuclear power safety.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Experimental particle physics

The particle physics group at KTH is involved in the ATLAS experiment at CERN, having contributed to the discovery and subsequent measurements of the Higgs boson and in searches for Super symmetry. The group consists of two faculty members, one researcher and two graduate students. We have made significant contributions to the design, construction and commissioning of the Liquid Argon calorimeter pre-sampler and are currently involved in the design of a new detector called the High Granularity Timing Detector.

The research activity for the PhD student will mainly be data analysis and physics interpretation of results from the ATLAS-experiment, but also to participate in the development of HGTD. The group, which has its premises at the AlbaNova buildings in the Stockholm Campus area, has extensive collaboration with other groups, among them the Stockholm University group located in the same building, which contributes to a stimulating research environment. Part of the research time will be spent at CERN.

Besides research at the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC, the particle and astroparticle physics group is also involved in astroparticle physics experiments studying antiparticles and X-rays mainly using the Fermi satellite, and PoGOLite - a balloon-borne mission for polarisation studies. For more information, please see www.particle.kth.se. The group is a member of The Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics, okc.albanova.se.
