Subject description

The subject of the position is naval architecture with a focus on smaller vessels and special ships and their design, seakeeping and safety with focus on operational properties, sustainability and function in the multimodal transport system. The subject includes areas like hydromechanics, ship technology, ship design, operational analysis including risk analysis, statistics and man-machine systems.

Duties

The associate professor shall develop activities in the subject field, conduct research and teach both first cycle and second cycle courses. The employment includes administrative tasks. The associate professor shall create new networks within and outside KTH, as well as actively seek external research funding and develop new courses on first, second and third cycle level. The associate professor shall contribute to the development of the educational programs at the department and supervise master thesis and PhD students within the subject field. The employee is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  • been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve , and
  • demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • Research expertise in the subject field including the ability to establish new research cooperations.
  • Teaching skills in the subject field including the ability to conduct and lead pedagogic development work.
  • Documented experience of teaching, course responsibility and course development on second cycle level.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to teach, carry out research and write applications for research funding in Swedish (at the latest within two years).

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • The ability to pursue third-stream activities and also provide information about research and development work.
  • Well established national and international contacts and network in the subject.
  • Potential to independent development as researcher and teacher in the subject, including ability for innovation and development of the subject.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • Expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • Administrative and other expertise that are of importance.
