KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Fiber- and Polymer Science

The position will be placed at the Hamedi Lab www.hamedilab.com, at the department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, and in collaboration with the Wallenberg Wood Science Centre, WWSC www.wwsc.se.

Diagnosis of an increasing number of diseases (such as HIV and antibiotic resistant bacteria), rely on centralized laboratories with specialized instruments and skilled personnel. They are therefore expensive and inappropriate for point of care diagnostics. Portable, automated and disposable devices with integrated molecular diagnostics (iMDx), could solve this problem.

This PhD program will explore how textiles can be used as a new material that integrates advanced diagnostic functions which enable portable integrated molecular diagnostics (iMDx) devices at almost zero-cost.

We will use textiles especially for Nucleic Acid Tests (NATs), and more specifically develop and analyze techniques for sample preparation (cell-lysis, nucleic acid extraction and purification). We will explore both synthetic (e.g. nylon) and biopolymer-based textiles (e.g. cotton) and tune their properties by adding chemical and electronic function to the textiles, to allow controlled manipulation of bacteria and viruses inside the porous structures of textiles.
