KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Civil (and Architectural) Engineering with specialization in hydrologic and hydraulic engineering

The position is placed under Div. of Resources, Energy and Infrastructure, Dept of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering, in which research is performed on hydraulic and applied hydrologic issues with connection to engineering and environmental problems. We offer a creative and stimulating working environment with a high degree of contacts outside the university. The project is financed by Swedish Hydropower Centre (SVC) and is closely related to hydraulic design and dam safety.

Hydraulic structures subjected to a flow velocity exceeding 25 m/s are usually prone to cavitation damages. The use of aerators is a common way to prevent the formation of cavitation. The entrainment and detrainment process of an aerator is still not well understood, which is mainly due to laboratory limitations. The difficulty rests with mathematical interpretations of instantaneous images of the water-air mixture with high air concentration. The aim of the project is, by means of CFD simulations to investigate the entrainment at an aerator and examine the stream-wise development of the detrainment process. The project is expected to provide insight into both the local and overall physical flow features of an aerator, an essential safety structure in almost each medium- and high-head spillway. Case studies will also be performed in connection with dam upgrade projects.
