The Division of Urban and regional studies is a multi- disciplinary environment. We study for example local and regional development in relation to sustainable development, actors and processes, and institutional preconditions. The research aims to in-depth theorization and development of better practices, often in collaboration with societal actors.

The planning and building process contains a multitude of actors, integrate several policy areas and can be characterized by diversity and complexity, with inherent conflicts between values, objectives and interests. The professional competence can be located in public authorities, as the departments of a municipality and at regional situated bodies, and private actors.

The area of study is the impact of professional roles on the result of planning; how collaborations are set and performed and the relation to the outcome, in relation to sustainability. The focus can be on development and change in existing built environment, on new establishments and areas, infrastructure projects as well as processes aiming for conservation of nature or cultural values. This includes differences in policy context and institutional settings, and investigates for example conflicts within collaboration, creation of meaning and values in relation to understanding based in professional knowledge and formulation of problems, approaches and expected results.

The position is linked to several ongoing research project concerning sustainable cities and roles and responsibilities. The position should contribute to research about governance, based on interaction between actors in relation to complexity and policy implementation.

Job description

The postdoc research focus on early stages of the process, and interaction between the involved professions, and how different professions and actors interact in different phases, how values are formulated and are weighed to each other, based on professional knowledge, and the contribution to sustainable development from social, ecological and economic aspects.

The position is mainly research focused and includes empirical studies and writing of scientific articles. The research can include both Swedish and international cases, but a Swedish focus is desirable. The work also includes presenting results at seminars and conferences.

Teaching at undergraduate and advance level can be included up to 20%.

Supervision at doctoral level may be included, and you are expected to be an active part of the academic environment.

Qualifications

The applicant must have:

  • a PhD in a relevant field. The doctoral degree must have been obtained within the last three years from the application deadline (some exceptions for special grounds, for instance sick leave and parental leave).
  • high level of written and oral English, and experience of writing scientific texts in English
  • good insight in common qualitative research methods in the area, and experiences of interview studies
  • theoretical knowledge in the area of studies of professions and/or actors and collaboration
  • basic knowledge of planning in a Swedish context
  • the ability to plan and exercise research work independently and in collaboration with others, within given frames.
  • high communicative skills, an analytical and reflexive approach and the ability to ask for support when problems arise.

Meritorious is:

  • education in the wider field of planning and building, with humanistic, social science, technology or natural science profile.
  • earlier experience to write and publish scientific articles
  • earlier studies of professions within planning and building field
  • experience of international studies or work within a relevant field
  • proficient level of Swedish
