KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Industrial Engineering and Management

Job description

The Department of Energy Technology at KTH is seeking a postdoc to join the Turbomachinery research group. The position is related to an ongoing Horizon 2020 EU research project that the group is coordinating and the extent of the position is 2 years. The aim of the project is to improve the current understanding of the physical processes that cause destructive blade vibrations in aircraft engines and improve the current design tools that are employed to analyse these vibrations. This aim will be achieved by performing unique ground experiments (rig tests) that investigate the key problems of flutter and forced response.

The successful applicant will be responsible for performing experimental work in a linear cascade wind tunnel. The aim of the experiments is to investigate the nature of unsteady flow in transonic compressors due to blade vibration. The successful applicant will be required to perform the following tasks: design instrumentation of blades and tunnel walls, design and testing of actuation mechanism for the vibrating blade, performing experiments in a linear cascade wind tunnel, post processing of experimental data, performing supporting analysis (FEM and CFD) and report writing. In addition to the experimental work, the candidate will be responsible for development of a non-linear friction damper model to predict and evaluate performance of a split ring damper for compressor blisk applications.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant field and ideally have experience in many of the following fields: turbomachinery aeromechanics, transonic flows, performing experiments in a wind tunnel including measuring techniques for steady and unsteady aerodynamic tests, mechanical design, piezo electric materials, friction modelling, performing CFD and FEM analysis.
