KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer science

We will develop methods for autonomous robot exploration and modeling in full 3D. The model should gradually, over time and with more and more observations available, decompose space into its component in a hierarchical fashion. The model will support localization and navigation tasks without sacrificing performance compared to traditional methods while catering for high-level reasoning and the execution of tasks that require a deeper spatial understanding. This will be accompanied with an exploration strategy, leveraging the model of space, trading traditional exploration objectives for geometric completeness in the map and the uncertainty in the position estimate of the robot against objectives relating to what level space has been understood.

Applicants should have a technical background and already have worked with robots, preferably flying ones, and understand and appreciate what it means to deal with the real world. The project is financed by Vetenskapsrådet and the studies will be carried out at the division of Robotics, perception and learning at the school of EECS, KTH.
