KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science

Lignin, a naturally abundant, phenolic biopolymer, could replace fossil-based phenols that today are used in material synthesis, e.g., the manufacture of plastic material.  A basis for eco-friendly materials for the future. The competence for the position in this area should be based on a solid knowledge in organic and polymer chemistry applied to biomaterials in general and specifically on lignin-derived sources. The appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in organic or polymer chemistry, polymer technology, macromolecular materials, soft materials or the equivalent. The applicant should also have a good insight in and willingness to learn how biomaterials are formed in nature and how this information can be utilized and applied in a sustainable way on lignin based raw materials. The formed materials should be carefully characterized to establish relationships between the properties of the building blocks and the properties of the formed materials. To do this, advanced characterization techniques (e.g. NMR) will be used to monitor chemical transformations of lignin fractions. The principles of green chemistry will also be applied when developing new synthesis protocols.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates who want to join the research front and create novel technology for a sustainable future, based on materials from the forest.
