Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Fibre and polymer science/Chemistry
The project concerns the application of atomistic-scale computational methods, primarily molecular dynamics simulations, to predict and interpret experimental results from, e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scattering of x-rays and neutrons, and vibrational spectroscopy, in highly heterogeneous biopolymer systems such as cellulose and hemicellulose. The ultimate goal is to reveal new and exciting information regarding the molecular structure and dynamics in those complex materials and how they are influenced by hydration. Such knowledge is sought after in both man-made biomaterials and the biological plant cell wall. The applicant should have a Master’s degree in an appropriate theoretical subject area, and experience from the molecular science field. She/he could, for example, be either a physicist with interest in chemical physics and statistical thermodynamics, or a chemist with interest in physical chemistry and molecular thermodynamics. The candidate should further have documented skills in computer programming and numerical analysis. Experience in molecular dynamics simulations and/or computer modelling is advantageous. This position has a strong focus on theoretical and computational methods. Therefore, the application letter should contain a half-page section where the applicant comments on the relation between theoretical models on one hanWe are looking for highly motivated candidates who want to join the research front and create novel technology for a sustainable future, based on materials from the forest.
