Project description

Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology/Fibre and polymer science

Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.

Wood has been mainly used for bioenergy, building & construction, and paper & packaging worldwide. Unlike traditional bulk wood modification, recent studies focus more on wood-based functional materials exploiting the nanocellulose orientation, nanoscale porosity and hierarchical structure in wood. Taking advantage of the hierarchical structure that naturally occurs in wood through a top-down approach, nano- and microporous wood templates can be prepared by the removal of chromophores and possibly wood biopolymers in the cell wall. The goal of the project is to understand the effect of the extraction process on the porous structure and chemical and mechanical properties of the wood template and further immobilise functional moieties on the wood template by chemical and enzymatic approaches for functional applications. The functional moieties include reactive molecules, functional enzymes, nanoparticles, and antibodies, targeting specific applications in wastewater treatment, biodiagnostics, and sensors.

The competence in this field should be based on a solid knowledge in wood science and technology, wood biotechnology, biochemistry, enzyme technology as applied to biomaterials in general and specifically on wood structures. The appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in synthetic biotechnology, biomaterials, industrial biotechnology, or the equivalent. Functional wood as environmental sensors will be studied in collaboration with the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.
  • the applicant must be able to speak and write scientific English, and speak English fluently.
  • the applicant should have documented skills in summarizing research results in written and oral presentation.

Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
