Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Fibre and polymer science
Methods to grow and organize inorganic particles in a structurally favorable manner along cellulose crystals, and three-dimensional cellulose templates (wood), are prioritized in this project. The intention is to use water-based chemistry to investigate hierarchal substructures of inorganic particle materials in the presence of cellulose, or as assembled to cellulose. The reactions will be carried out via confined space precipitation/crystallization in cellulose matrices, with a focus on length/volume scales and the requirements for proper nucleation chemistry to occur. The studies will pave the way for designing inorganic structures with specific atomic terminations (and compositions) in the area of hybrid cellulose materials, with induced physical and chemical properties such as semi-conductive, optical, biological properties etc.
The appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in polymer technology, macromolecular materials, soft materials or the equivalent and a strong interest in laboratory work, with the associated material characterizations, primarily involving microscopy. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who want to join the research front and create novel technology for a sustainable future, based on materials from the forest.
