Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Fibre and polymer science
The unique brilliant structural colours found in natural creatures are generated from light interference in the nanoscale periodic multilayer structures on their surfaces. By mimicking such nanostructures in nature, new materials with responsive structural colours by external physical or chemical stimuli have been successfully generated. Relevant applications are reflective coatings, colour pigments, and optical sensors. The goal of the project is to understand the self-assembly process of cellulose nanocrystals to photonic nanostructures, and to design and fabricate novel responsive photonic materials thereof.
The required competence should be based on a solid knowledge in surface and colloidal chemistry, materials/polymer chemistry, and optical physics as applied to biomaterials such as fibres and cellulose systems. Appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in polymer technology, materials science and engineering, physical chemistry or the equivalent. To be able to design new systems with improved performance, the applicant should have a good insight in natural photonic structures. The applicant should be able to tailor the surface chemistry of cellulose nanocrystals, and design the self-assembly process for the fabrication of new materials. The understanding of the structure-property relationship of the materials is essential and a wide range of characterization tools will be used, particularly, optical properties will be studied in collaboration with the materials optics group at Linköping University.
