Third-cycle subject: Information and Communication Technology

The positions are funded by the European Commission under an ambitious, 4-year, 3.7 million EUR Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) project RAIS (Real-Time Analytics for the Internet of Sports) for which KTH is the coordinator. The project focuses on the design of decentralized, scalable and secure collective awareness platforms for real-time data analytics and machine learning, which preserve end-user privacy and information ownership targeted at the sport applications. The RAIS consortium aspires to establish a fertile multidisciplinary research and innovation community with strong entrepreneurial culture that will advance wearable sport-sensing and quantified-self devices and accompanying middleware.

In particular, the students at KTH will conduct original research in the intersection of the areas of Decentralized Machine Learning, Data Mining, Information Network Analysis as well as work on design and implementation of decentralized systems for the project. The students will have a chance to collaborate and perform secondments at RAIS partner universities and companies in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Sweden, UK and USA.

The students are expected to contribute actively to the activities planned by the project (scientific publications, taking courses, secondments, participation to meetings and events, preparation of educational material, coordination of work, etc.).

You will be part of the SCS (Software and Communication Systems) department, with your studies supervised by Associate Professor Sarunas Girdzijauskas.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

At the time of recruitment, the applicants must have less than 4 years of full-time research experience after obtaining their degree and must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the prior three years.

Students in their final year of Master education may also apply and if qualified, receive a conditional offer. If the applicant has not completed her studies, she should include a written statement from the degree administration office (or equivalent department), confirming that she is enrolled on the final year of her education and stating the expected completion date. If the applicant receives a conditional offer, the candidate should present the degree certificate before enrollment.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.
  • fluency in English (both oral and written).

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
