KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Industrial Ecology

The goal of the project is to estimate the environmental impacts of biochar, when the biochar is used for wastewater treatment, in agriculture or for remediation of contaminated soil. Biochar is formed by heating biomass and can help to reduce the climate impact by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into a solid material that can be used for various purposes, mainly in soils. The project is performed in a multidisciplinary collaboration with other reserarch organizations and companies.

Several alternative systems for production and use of biochar will be explored by modeling the mass and energy flows and comparing climate impact and other environmental impacts. You will examine the conditions and effects of production and use through various case studies.
