KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

The position will be located in the power electronics research group within the school of electrical engineering and computer science at KTH. The group carries out research in several fields, notably high power electronics for power transmission grids and applications of wide-bandgap power semiconductors.

The project aims at investigating possibilities for over-current capability of power converters with power semiconductor devices based on silicon carbide (SiC). This should be acieved without over-dimensioning in the normal sense. Especially, the possibility to operate at higher maximum temperatures should be investigated. This requires detailed investigations of materials and technologies for packaging of the power semiconductor devices. Additionally, the impact of over-current on other components in the system should be investigated. Finally, over-current handling by means of advanced control shold be investigated. The project is performed in co-operation with ABB.
