Project description
Third-cycle subject: Computer Science with Computational Biology track
The project is funded by Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC, https://e-science.se/) as part of a highly interdisciplinary collaborative initiative called Brain-Information technology (Brain-IT). The main emphasis in the project is on hierarchical brain-like network architectures for holistic pattern discovery drawing from the computational insights into neural information processing in the brain in the context of multi-modal perception, sensory fusion, sequence learning and memory association among others. Within the project's scope it is intended to build scalable implementations and systematically study computational capabilities of the brain-like algorithms, typically in comparison with more classical machine learning approaches. The project will also offer an opportunity to gear the proposed neurocomputing methods to specific real-world applications available within the SeRC community.
The applicant is expected to have background in physics and/or computer science with good understanding of machine learning problems and keen interest in brain science (computational brain/neuroscience). It is required that the applicant is a competent programmer and previous experience with deploying implementations on supercomputers constitutes a valuable asset.
The position is based in the Computational Brain Science unit (https://www.kth.se/cst/research/computational-brain-science-1.779076), School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH. Given a wide network of local collaborators in the realm of brain science and neurocomputing outside KTH, the student will strongly interact with researchers at Stockholm University (psychology) and Karolinska Institutet (neuroscience). The appointed student will also become a member of a vibrant interdisciplinary community at SeRC (https://e-science.se/).
