KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science with Computational Biology track

The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, VR) and is concerned with computational modelling of cortical memory. A successful candidate is expected to build on the previous work in the group with focus on large-scale spiking neural network models of working memory and pursue research questions related to synaptic plasticity, mechanism of short-term memory maintenance, dynamical interactions with multimodal long-term storage etc. Within the project's scope it is intended to constrain the network model with experimental data, mainly electrophysiological recordings and/or macroscopic neuroimaging data. Thus, the student will also interact with collaborating experimental neuroscientists and be involved in data analysis efforts.

The applicant is expected to have background in physics and/or computer science and keen interest in neuroscience, neuroinformatics or a related interdisciplinary field with neurobiological aspects. Previous experience in computational modelling/simulations of physical systems is desirable and competence in time series analysis, signal processing and computational neuroscience constitutes a valuable asset.

The position is based in the Computational Brain Science unit (https://www.kth.se/cst/research/computational-brain-science-1.779076), School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH. Our research environment is conducive to synergistic approaches to a wide range of brain research problems with contributions to, e.g., neurorobotics, computational vision, computational brain theory, cognitive science, neuromorphic computing, artificial intelligence and data science. In addition, given a wide network of local collaborators outside KTH, the student will have ample opportunities to interact with researchers at Stockholm University (psychology) and Karolinska Institutet (cognitive neuroscience/neuroimaging).

What we offer

  • The possibility to study in a dynamic international research environment in close cooperation with industries and advanced universities the world over.
  • Life-long network through KTH's Alumni organization.
  • A personal study plan to support your development within your areas of interest.
  • A workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement.
  • Work and study in Stockholm, one of Europe´s fastest growing capitals, which is close to both nature and the sea.
  • Help to relocate and get settled in Sweden and at KTH.
  • Access to supercomputing facilities and training.
  • A highly interdisciplinary research environment including a vibrant network of scientists at Stockholm's academic institutions conducting research in machine learning, intelligent systems, high-perfomance computing, neuroscience, psychology etc.

  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
