Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical engineering (Electrical Energy Conversion)
We are looking for an engaged, independent-thinker candidate for a project related to multiphase electrical machines, that is electrical machines where the number of phases is greater than three. The Department of Electric Power and Energy Systems at KTH finances this project, which is complementary to other projects in the same research field currently running in the department. You will be part of the Electrical Machines and Drives Laboratory team, where you will report to two faculty members (Assoc. Prof. Luca Peretti and Assoc. Prof. Oskar Wallmark).
You will be expected to work with analysis and the estimation of electrical parameters of a multiphase electrical machine, in particular addressing the issue of estimating parameters for higher-order voltage/current odd harmonics, up to the number of phases. In a different fashion with respect to three-phase machines, such harmonics heavily contribute to the current ripple and sometimes to the torque generation in multi-phase electrical machines. Only a precise knowledge of their values leads to a robust control solution. You will pay particular attention on the methods and the algorithms that could lead to an automatic parameter estimation by means of tailored self-commissioning procedures performed by means of frequency converters.
Continuous interaction with the projects running in parallel, as well as engagement in experimental testing performed in laboratory, is also part of your work.
In addition to your doctoral studies, you will be expected to teach or perform other departmental duties up to 20% of your full-time employment. Doctoral student employment at KTH offers excellent conditions with competitive salaries, health care, social security, and contributions to pension funds.
