Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
The rapid development in machine learning has led to spectacular results in a number of computer applications. An important reason for this is the rich availability of training data in these applications needed to train the algorithms. These successes have led researchers to study the possibilities for machine learning in a range of engineering areas such as robotics, smart buildings and self-driving cars. These are examples of highly complex dynamic systems where access to data is limited and where security aspects are important. In order to achieve safe and reliable cyber-physical systems, it is necessary to include physical knowledge in the learning phase of the algorithms . In particular, in many applications it is possible to actively control the system so that as informative data as possible can be extracted.
In this project we focus on the fundamental aspects of learning algorithms for decision and control of dynamical systems. The field of research lies in the interface between electrical and computer engineering and computer science and includes systems and control, signal processing , mathematical statistics and machine learning. Computational aspects are also of great importance since many applications and optimization based algorithms are computer-intensive.
The project is part of the network of excellence, NewLEADS, which is funded by the Swedish Research Council and consists of 7 senior researchers from KTH and Uppsala University as well as postdoctoral and doctoral students. As a doctoral student in this research environment, you will be co-supervised by researchers from both universities, having the opportunity to attend international research meetings, as well as attending international conferences and other activities that can extend your professional network and benefit your future career. Within the project, there will be good opportunities to interact with Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP, http://wasp-sweden.org).
