KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

The doctoral project will be performed at the division of Information Science and Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, KTH, and will be done in collaboration with Trafikverket, within the framework of the large European project SHIFT2RAIL. This doctoral project is one of several in a joint initiative between Trafikverket and KTH, in order to reach results that can be used within future versions of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

Accurate positioning of trains and other rail vehicles is crucial to maintain safety and allow efficient use of railway systems. In today’s railway networks, position information is primarily obtained using balises, that are mounted along the track and transmit signals to passing trains, about their position. For future version of traffic management systems, more accurate positioning is needed, while it also is desirable to reduce the cost for installation and maintenance of the balises. The goal of this project is to propose, analyze and evaluate cost-efficient positioning solutions, based on combinations of different sources of information, such as GNSS, odometers, inertial sensors, map information, and cameras. In addition to estimating the position, it is equally important to be able to provide guarantees on the accuracy of the estimates, as input to the traffic management. If one or several of the sensors fail, it is crucial to quickly detect the failure, but also to keep providing as accurate position estimates as possible, including relevant safety margins, so that the traffic can be maintained and is not stopped completely.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or

We are seeking a candidate who has a good foundation and a large interest in stochastic signal processing.

Good command of English orally and in writing, is required.

A candidate who does not know Swedish should have an interest and goal to learn Swedish during the doctoral education.

Target degree: Licenciate degree

A Degree of Licentiate has less extensive requirements than a Doctoral Degree and can normally be obtained after two years of completed studies within one of KTH's third-cycle subjects. The Degree of Licentiate corresponds to 120 ECTS credits and consists of courses (the amount depending on the third-cycle subject, but with a minimum of 30 ECTS credits), research work and a licentiate thesis.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
