Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical engineering
Waveguide Integrated Graphene Based Photodectors
Gas sensing technologies for carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ethanol and hydrocarbons are important for many of applications such as air quality monitoring, medical applications, industrial safety systems, aeronautic and automotive applications, breath-based alcohol sensing, and environmental monitoring, including sensors for integration in mobile phones. However, for many of these applications existing gas sensors are too expensive, bulky or low-performance. Thus, there is a critical need for gas sensor systems that are low-cost, compact, highly sensitive and specific to the targeted gas. In this project, a gas sensor system based on a photodetector for mid-infrared (mid-IR) light, integrated onto a silicon photonic waveguide, will be developed. The use of graphene and other 2D materials as detector materials will be explored. The aim of the project is to develop optical gas sensors that can be used in low-cost high volume products, such as mobile phones. The experimental work will be conducted in the KTH laser lab and the KTH micro and nano fabrication cleanroom in Stockholm (Kista). The project engages several fellow doctoral students at the Department of Micro and Nanosystems and is conducted in close cooperation with high-profile industrial partners and other research groups from inside and outside of KTH.
