Project description

Third-cycle subject: Machine design , with specialization in mechatronics for internal combustion engines

The growing demand for environmentally-neutral transport is a key driver behind the increased integration of IC engine mechanics, thermodynamics, chemical engineering and mechatronic subsystems. The PhD position advertised here is a collaboration between the Division of Internal Combustion Engineering at the KTH Department of Machine Design and Scania CV AB and FFI.

The project aims to reduce the environmental impact of engines for heavy vehicles through the use of the latest mechatronics. The research focus is on how to avoid unwanted self-ignition (so called “knock”) in ignition gas engines through the use of modern sensors and rapid control technology. One of the most important aspects of the project is to investigate how rapid control technology enables efficient use of biogas of varying quality.

The project takes place in close collaboration between academia and industry. As a PhD student, you will be stationed in industry and one or more internships will be a natural aspect of the education.

What we offer

  • The possibility to study in a dynamic international research environment in close cooperation with industries and advanced universities the world over.
  • Life-long network through KTH's Alumni organization.
  • A personal study plan to support your development within your areas of interest.
  • A workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement.
  • Work and study in Stockholm, one of Europe´s fastest growing capitals, which is close to both nature and the sea.
  • Help to relocate and get settled in Sweden and at KTH.
  • A challenging development project at the absolute cutting edge of combustion engine technology.
  • An industry-oriented project where you as a PhD student work in close collaboration with industry researchers and development engineers at some of the world's most prominent vehicle manufacturers.
  • An opportunity to make a contribution to a cleaner environment and a more stable climate for the future.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Applicant shall have, or be close to receiving, a Master of Science (or equivalent M.Sc.) in mechanical, energy, automotive, regulatory, computer, electrical engineering, mechatronics or technical physics.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

We believe that, to achieve success in their research studies, candidates will need the following skills and competence:

  • Very good knowledge (i.e. upper quartile grades) in at least one of the areas of mechatronics, control technology, modeling or signal processing in combination with good knowledge (read upper half grades) in at least two of the other areas.
  • Good knowledge of IC engine function, plus good knowledge of thermodynamics.
  • Knowledge of combustion chemistry and fluid mechanics is an advantage, as is one or two years of industrial experience working with IC engines(e.g. calibration, functionality development or emission control systems).
  • A strong sense of initiative and independence, and the ability to handle assigned tasksa nd achieve set goals, plus an attitude that is inclusive and collaborative are absolute requirements for this post.
  • The ability to read and compile technical and scientific documents to a tight deadline, as well as documented experience in technical and / or scientific report writing, is an advantage.
  • A good working knowledge of English that enables unrestricted communication in the field, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic working knowledge of Swedish, as reflected by:
    • From the first day, you can speak Swedish during coffee breaks and communicate with support staff who do not have good knowledge of English.
    • During your first year, you can manage to learn Swedish sufficiently well that you can get by with industrial background documentation in Swedish without the help of computer programs or translators. After the first year, supervision will be in Swedish.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
