Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center which started in 2009 and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers, KTH and Linköping University striving for scientific excellence, and the overall aim is to develop new materials from trees. The mission of the center is to create knowledge and competence as a basis for eco-friendly materials for the future.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science
Cellulose fibres is a class of materials with intriguing templating capabilities. This is strongly correlated to their high aspect ratio, porous macroscopic structure and large number of reactive groups available for site-specific functionalization. However, robust modification strategies through the interaction with precision polymers and is still in its infancy. Here, researchers with expertise in robust chemistries need to undertake the challenge of unfolding new modification strategies that enable efficient hybridization, both physical and chemical, with functional probes being oligomers. The appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in organic or polymer chemistry, polymer technology, macromolecular materials, soft materials or the equivalent. The applicant should have a good insight in and willingness to learn how hybrid materials are generated through an interplay between synthetic polymers and cellulolse based raw materials. The formed hybrid materials should be carefully characterized to establish structure-to-property relationship. To do this, advanced characterization techniques (e.g. NMR, MALDI-TOF, FT-RAMAN, TEM, SEM etc) will be used to monitor chemistry and produced materials. Sustainable, robust and orthogonal chemistries, including click reactions, will be heavily utilized to develop cutting-edge polymers and hybrid materials.
We are looking for motivated and independent candidates who are eager to unfold novel cellulosic high-performance materials for a sustainable and bright future.
