Project description

Third-cycle subject: Information and Communication Technology

The department of Software and Computer Systems at KTH is looking for excellent candidates for two PhD student positions in the area that lies at the intersection of distributed systems, data science, data intensive computing, machine learning and deep learning.   The selected candidates are expected to have a strong background and passionate interest in topics of at least one of aforementioned areas.

The advertised doctoral student positions are mainly within the Horizon 2020 EU-Project “ExtremeEarth: From Copernicus Big Data to Extreme Earth Analytics” that aims at developing scalable Extreme Earth Analytics techniques and technologies for extracting information and knowledge out of the petabytes of Copernicus data collected in the European Copernicus program for monitoring the Earth. The techniques and technologies to be developed in the project will extend the Hops platform (https://www.hops.io/) for Data Science and Data Engineering, jointly developed by KTH, RISE SICS, and Logical Clocks AB, to offer unprecedented scalability to extreme data volumes and scale-out distributed deep learning for Copernicus data.

The doctoral students will contribute to development of novel and enhancement of exiting techniques, methods and algorithms for scalable big data analysis, as well as to building and enhancing a platform for Data Science and Data Engineering, such as Hopsworks, in order to provide system support for scalable big data analytics.

The position is limited to four years, but may, conditioned on up to 20% department duties, e.g., teaching and supervision, be extended to five years. The doctoral student should be enrolled at KTH and the application process for being admitted to the doctoral study program is initiated in conjunction with the employment. Doctoral student employment at KTH offers excellent conditions with competitive salaries, health care, social security, and contributions to pension funds.
