The Department of Urban Planning and Environment consists of three divisions and is focused specifically on urban and regional studies, geoinformatics and systems analysis and economics. The area of expertise includes research on systems, models and tools for understanding, preserving, changing, managing and developing society, the land and the built environment. The ambition is to analyze the prerequisites, conditions and strategies for sustainable social development, both in national and international context.

Job description

We seek a research engineer for work with social network analysis. The position is placed at Division of Urban and Regional Studies, in the project: Understanding the Rationales of Donors-Funded Civil Society in Developing Countries: A Game Theory Approach. The project examines donors-national governments-NGOs networks for the advancement of development and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, from a game theory perspective.

Network analysis and modelling of existing data is the primary work task. However, additional data may be needed to collect via online surveys if the existing data is not enough to provide nuanced results. The extent is decided in relation to the earlier experiences of the applicant. The work is performed in close cooperation with the project leader.

Qualifications

The applicant must have:

  • A Swedish university degree or equivalent studies, or education from another country, in a relevant discipline e.g. planning, political science, interdisciplinary sustainability science, environmental policy and governance.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Previous experience contributing to scholarly research involving social network analysis of complex inter-organizational networks is required, as is proficiency in one or more common network analysis tools (e.g. UCINET, R, ORA, equivalent.); or documented experience of other computer supported analytical tools, preferable for analysis of complex systems or equivalent

Meritorious is:

  • Previous experience of analysing complex inter-organizational networks based on social networking analysis
  • Knowledge of network analysis that is built on social science methods foundation
  • Previous experience working with international development organizations and/or experience working as a practitioner in the field of development is desirable but not necessary.

Personal qualities will be given high importance, and we seek you with

  • Ability to work independent and structured within a given frame
  • Good communicative skills
  • Good ability to collaborate
