KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

Job description

The candidate will work at the Linne FLOW Centre, KTH Mechanics, and SeRC (Swedish e-science Research Centre) in the KTH School of Engineering Sciences. The Linné FLOW Centre at KTH started in January 2007 and is one of 20 original centres of excellence set up by the Swedish Research Council (VR), as the result of a highly competitive process with international evaluation. The role of the Linné FLOW Centre is to bring together and coordinate the fundamental fluid dynamics research performed by the partners. It enables a strengthening of key areas as well as spearheading into new developing areas. In particular the long-term nature of the funding enables the development of numerical and experimental tools, something very difficult in ordinary more short-term projects.

The Group is looking for a Research engineer in the area of data analysis and numerical simulations of turbulent multiphase flows. The aim of the project is to develop tools for the analysis of the large datasets from numerical simulations of dispersion of particles of different shapes in turbulent flows.

Phenomena of interest in environmental fluid mechanics as well as applications with industrial implications will be investigated, also according to the own interests of the appointed candidate. A deep understanding of the mechanisms underlying the flow of suspensions, the transition to turbulence and the turbulence characteristics is crucial for many important practical applications involving engineered complex fluids, such as pastes and paper pulp. Investigating the mechanisms by which the system microstructure determines the macroscopic flow properties and vice versa will not only give valuable insights into the nature of flowing suspensions but will also lead to new ways to model and control these flow. The person will have the opportunity to interact with PhD students and post-docs of the FLOW graduate school to develop his/her skills.

Information about our research group and our research interests and projects can be found at www.mech.kth.se/ and www.mech.kth.se/~luca

Qualifications

The applicant should have a masters and PhD degree in fluid mechanics or related fields, and experience in numerical simulations of turbulent multiphase flows. The position will also require independent work in addition to collaborative skills and creative thinking. In addition, good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
