At the Division of Philosophy, research is conducted in moral philosophy, science theory, risk philosophy, logic, language philosophy and decision theory. Part of the research is theoretical, but a large part of the research has a clear connection with relevant philosophical issues for society. The department provides courses in philosophy of science, ethics for engineers, philosophy of risk, decision theory and the philosophy of mathematics. Now we're looking for a postdoc in applied ethics: moral responsibility for algorithmic decision making in transport and social planning.

Job description

The research project aims at examining ethical aspects of machine learning algorithms in transport and social planning. What is an ethically responsible development and use of machine learning algorithms in these areas? What responsibility do system developers have? The individual programmer? What is the responsibility of the user? When is it justifiable to use such technologies in decision making? What types of decisions should definitely not be covered? What responsibility do authorities have? In many AI/ machine learning situations there companies or authorities become customers to algorithm developing companies. This creates a chain of responsibility that requires needs to be understood. In addition to responsibilities, the development and use of AI/machine learning algorithms raises relating to personal integrity and information security, the responsibility for upholding these also need examining.

The position is announced as part of a collaboration between the Division of Philosophy, the Division of Strategic Sustainability Studies, and the Divison of Media Technology and Interaction Design, all at KTH. The person who gets the position is expected to be an active driving force in this cooperation. 

Qualifications

Doctoral degree is a requirement, as well as good English. Applicants should have a strong background in moral philosophy, preferably applied ethics, have demonstrated the ability to publish in international peer review systems, and be strongly motivated. Previous research on moral responsibility is important. As the project involves collaboration with researchers from other disciplines, it is important to have good communication skills. Documented experience of work with researchers from technological subjects is therefore also important.
