KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

The department of Solid Mechanics pursues basic and applied research in biomechanics, composite mechanics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics and fatigue, material mechanics and paper mechanics. There are strong connections to industry and public actors.

Job description

The current project is about experimental characterization and quantification of microscopic deformation and damage mechanisms in paper and cardboard during moisture changes and during complex load cases. Two issues to be studied are what happens at the microscopic level during moisture changes in fibres and fibre-fibre joints and which deformation mechanisms are dominant in in-plane compression loading of the sheet. Of particular importance is being able to measure and characterize the microscopic deformation. To do this, unique 4D computed tomography studies must be combined with mathematical modeling.

Postdoctoral research position primarily concerns one year's employment. Provided the research is successful and financing can be arranged, the position can be extended by a maximum of one year.

Qualifications

A suitable background is a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent. In addition to traditional academic qualifications, a relevant doctoral thesis, international experience and language skills are merits. For the service in question, knowledge of and experience of computed micro tomography is of utmost importance and especially the design and manufacture of various test equipment for this purpose.
