Two PhD positions are available within the EU funded Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network POLKA (POLution Know-how and Abatement). Combustion of hydrogen from renewable sources is an emerging technology that can replace fossil fuels and thus provide carbon-neutral energy. The goal of POLKA is to solve serious technical problems, which are unique to hydrogen combustion: thermoacoustic instabilities and flashback. Thermoacoustic instabilities are large-amplitude pressure oscillations caused by an escalating interaction between the flame and acoustic waves; they tend to occur unexpectedly and cause major hardware damage. Flashback is the dangerous phenomenon of the flame propagating backwards into components not designed for high temperatures. The ultimate vision of POLKA is to create new physical insight and advanced simulation tools, so as to underpin the development of hydrogen-fuelled combustion systems (gas turbines, aero-engines, boilers furnaces, etc). The methods to be used are a combination of experiments, numerical simulations and analytical techniques. The projects at KTH focus on: Sound absorption mechanisms in micro-perforated plates with grazing flow and under hot conditions and Passive instability control by finned tube rows.

  • The research in aeroacoustics at KTH focus on internal flows and flow duct systems. The research group consists of five seniors and ten PhD students within the Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory Research for Sound and Vibration, MWL. The research is in part in cooperation with the vehicle industry.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Basic knowledge in acoustics or fluid mechanics is required. Applicants must satisfy eligibility rules, in particular in terms of transnational mobility including not having resided or carried out ones main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 last years.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
