KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Industrial Engineering and Management

Digitization is breaking through on a broad front. With modern technology for measurements and monitoring, large amounts of information can be collected by different systems in society. This project focuses on physical assets provided with sensors and monitoring equipment, and where collected data then can be processed by using advanced techniques of data analysis and machine learning. However, the question is how to use all the collected data? What analyzes should be done? And how can the new "smart" technologies be utilized in asset management, e.g. to increase efficiency, create new services, and develop new businesses?

The project revolves around infrastructure systems, such as water pipelines, roads, bridges and railways, which typically are critical to society, has evolved successively over a long period of time, and today face major challenges in terms of operations and maintenance. The PhD student will focus on how these infrastructure systems can be made more sustainable and socially effective through the introduction of new "smart" technologies. Using comparative studies of the introduction of smart technologies in various infrastructure systems under different periods, the intention is to develop knowledge on how these technologies that can be utilized in the best possible way, as well as on the effect these technologies have on existing and future business models. As there is a strong technological development in this area, the PhD student will work at the interface between innovation management/business development, systemic innovation, and technology development.

The project will be exe in collaboration with several private and public industry partners that deliver different types of infrasystem services, such as in energy, water, and transport.

The position is located at the Department of Industrial Economics and Organization at KTH. The project is also part of the Mistra multidisciplinary program "InfraMaint - Smart Maintenance of Infrastructure".
