KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Machine Design

The unit for Mechatronics and Embedded Systems is looking for a doctoral student focusing on Autonomous Transport Systems. You will be part of and collaborate with a group of other doctoral students and senior researchers. You will also work in close collaboration with Scania.

Autonomous Transport Systems is a paradigm shift for the industry of heavy trucks. Instead of providing simply trucks, this new idea is to provide whole systems of trucks. Furthermore, the trucks are to be operated autonomously without a driver, in closed areas, e.g. mines, or on public roads. Both since the vehicles are driverless and that the underlying technology is based upon artificial intelligence and machine learning, it will be very challenging to guarantee safe operation; completely new technologies and methods will be needed.

The aim of this research project is to develop theories and methods to support the engineering of safe Autonomous Transport Systems. Research results are expected to lead to both publishable results with high scientific quality and be relevant for industrial application. Research tasks include theory and method development, modeling, simulation, development of prototype tools, and validation against real industrial systems.

The project offers a unique opportunity to work with industrially motivated research where the research goals are coordinated with the emerging needs in the industry. You will spend part of the time located at Scania in order to collaborate with Scania engineers and to carry out case studies on real industrial examples.

The project is funded by Sweden's Innovation Agency "Vinnova" and Scania.
