Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering Materials Science
The Departments Materials Science and Engineering and Solid Mechanics at KTH have jointly established a Center for Mechanics and Materials Design to strengthen the research area Mechanical properties of Materials. The center is run in close cooperation with the Swedish Engineering and Materials Industries and a large number of doctoral students will be employed to work on various projects within the center.
The PhD project announced here is aimed at the investigations of the initiation of fatigue in high strength steels that are exposed to high thermomechanical loads, e.g. in rolling contacts. The project is interdisciplinary and is supervised by supervisors from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Solid Mechanics, and the industrial partner Ovako. Collaboration with the University of Cambridge is also important for the project. The main research question of the project is fundamental and also of great technical importance for e.g. Ovako and their products. Part of the work will also be conducted at Ovako in Hofors.
Although fatigue is a very common cause of failure in mechanical components, the initiation of fatigue is still unexplored, especially in correlation with the microstructure of the material. The methodology that will be used include mechanical testing, microstructural characterization and modeling.
What we offer
Close collaboration and industry supervision by Ovako
