KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics span from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, biophysics, mathematical physics, atomic, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear reactor physics, nuclear reactor technology and nuclear power safety.

The Division of Nuclear Power Safety conducts research and teaching including safety analysis and management for operating nuclear power plants and for new Gen III+, IV reactor systems, severe accidents, reactor and containment thermal-hydraulics.

Job description

The project is in the area of severe accident research for light water reactors. One of the existing ex-vessel strategies of severe accident management stipulates corium melt fragmentation and quenching in water, formation of a particulate debris bed and its long-term cooling by water at natural convection. Formation of corium debris bed can also happen during in-vessel phase of the accident.

Corium debris bed coolability is affected by many parameters including decay heat, debris bed geometry and properties, conditions in water pool, etc.

Uncoolable debris bed will undergo dry or wet re-melting. The project deals with experimental study of complex phenomena during corium debris bed remelting and with development of models for reactor application. Experiments are carried out in relatively small scale with different simulant materials.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with PhD degree in nuclear, mechanical, chemical or industrial engineering with a specialization in heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics or reactor thermal hydraulics and preferably with experience of experimentation and modelling of ex-vessel corium debris bed formation, cooling and re-melting.

The successful applicant should be strongly motivated, have the capability to work independently as well as in collaboration with members of the research group, and have good communication skills.
