The position is located within the Division for History of Science, Technology and Environment, where we conduct both research and teaching. Our departure points are that technology and science are cultural elements that shape and are shaped by the conditions of life on earth. Also that the historical perspectives are central for understanding contemporary and future circumstances and transitions. Within the Division you will work within the project Greening the Poles: Science, the Environment, and the Creation of the Modern Arctic and Antarctic (GRETPOL). GRETPOL is funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant (#716211). The project’s central aim is to investigate and explain the development of social, political, and scientific understandings of polar environments during the years 1945-1991 in a transnational historical perspective.

Job description

As a postdoc with us you'll first and foremost collect and analyze primary historical materials on Soviet research and politics in the Antarctic, and potentially also from other countries. The main aim will be to investigate how certain international agreements concerning marine resources and minerals in Antarctica were developed from the 1960s through to the 1990s. You will work with archival material and conduct oral history interviews if necessary. You'll also be part of a larger research team and is expected to contribute to jointly-authored publications.

Qualifications

We require that you have a high degree of competence in Russian language and preferably also another language relevant to the Antarctic Treaty System (eg French, Chinese, Polish, Korean, etc). The successful applicant is expected to be able to communicate fluently in English and to write academic work in English. The successful applicant is expected to have experience with historical research methods. A PhD is a prerequisite for the position, but the degree doesn't necessarily have to be in history.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
