Job description
This position is mainly funded by the H2020 Spine project. The aim is to develop and validate a novel, end-to-end open-source software platform for integrated energy system modelling (called Spine) that will enable open, practical, flexible and realistic planning of future European grids. Best practices in terms of data acquisition, visualization, management and pass-through, as well as problem formulation, interpretation and resolution, are identified and combined into a modular tool to cover a large number of modelling exercises. Following this strategy, Spine will allow grid operators, energy producers and researchers to carry out analyses that are not possible with current modelling platforms, and potentially not even yet conceived.

The role of KTH is to participate in several Work Packages including: WP2, Spine modelling toolbox; WP3, Spine energy systems model; WP4, Spine data conversion tools; and WP6, Deployment of the tools with case studies. In WP4, we investigate the spatial aggregation of energy conversion systems in order to develop and implement an aggregation tool within Spine. In WP6, we coordinate the execution among project partners of 13 case studies designed to improve, validate and deploy Spine. We also lead the execution of several of these case studies including one case study on spatial aggregation of nodal systems, and one on power grid investments under uncertainty.
In addition to this it is expected that the selected applicant can supervise project workers which, e.g., implement different case studies within the Spine model.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or be near completion) in energy system modelling with a strong background in software architecture, or vice versa, a Ph.D. in software architecture with a strong background in energy system modelling. The candidate should master at least some of the following areas: power system aggregation, stochastic optimization, collaborative software writing, database management, parallel computing. Knowledge of SQL, Python and/or Julia are strong merits.
The successful applicant should have an outstanding research and publication record. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are a requirement. We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who is able to work independently. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to present and publish research results.
