KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Subject area

Chemical engineering with focus on separation processes

Subject description

The subject comprises chemical separation processes, including the underlying mechanisms, the configuration of single unit operations, and the design of full separation systems. Sustainability aspects are of central importance. The subject covers chemical separation processes for recycling materials and consumer products, and for extracting valuable materials from industrial residual and waste streams. The subject also covers the separation technology that needs to be developed for the production of chemicals from renewable raw materials (biochemical production and bio refineries), as well as separation technology in other chemical production.

Job description

The position includes research, supervision of doctoral students and teaching in the subject area. The assistant professor is also expected to teach courses outside her/his own subject area, for example in the various chemistry-oriented education programs provided by the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health. Bachelor level teaching takes place in Swedish, while higher courses are given in English. The applicant is expected to be able to teach in both English and Swedish when being promoted to associate professor.

The assistant professor will be given the opportunity to develop the independence as a researcher and gain credentials that may give eligibility for another teaching position for which higher requirements are required (see Chapter 4, §12a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The assistant professor may apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4. § 12c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Eligibility requirements

Persons eligible for employment are those who have been awarded a PhD degree, or achieved the equivalent scientific competence. Priority is given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD degree within the last five years before the application deadline. However, even those who have completed their doctorate or have obtained equivalent qualifications in the past may qualify for special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

  • demonstrated scientific proficiency in chemical engineering with a focus on separation processes, through scientific publication, conference participation, research cooperation, and other commitments in the scientific community such as, for example, audit or expert assignments.
  • the potential to qualify for higher teacher recruitment. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher in the subject area as well as the ability to establish, renew and develop the research area in question.

It is of second most importance that the applicant has

  • ability and practical experience of problem solving and implementation of newly acquired knowledge through, for example, experimental or computational methods.

  • postdoctoral student stay in a research environment other than the university where the applicant was a doctoral student. In application-related areas, experience from research and development work in industry or other organizations can be considered to correspond to a traditional post-doctoral stay at another university.

Specific assessment criteria for promotion to Associate Professor

When assessing the application for promotion to associate professor, the applicant's ability to independently initiate and conduct research of high scientific quality, published in international journals and conference volumes, as well as the applicant's ability to obtain funding for research activities will be evaluated.

Of special significance is the applicant's ability to independently establish new collaborations and research directions. Especially important is also that the applicant has shown proficiency in teaching and supervision. The ability to teach in Swedish is a credit that will be given great importance in the application for promotion.
