KTH, School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology & Health

Job description

The School of Engineering sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health spans a vast field, from cellular and molecular level to complex systems and over the broader subject fields health, environment, materials, and energy. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from Chemistry to Materials science, Environmental science, Biochemistry, Biology and Medicine. The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry, Degree Programs in Engineering Chemistry, Technical Preparatory Year and three international master programs: Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, Macromolecular Materials and Molecular Science and Engineering. We also cooperate with the master programs Energy and Environment, Materials Design and Biotechnology.

The main objective will be to obtain systematic experimental evidence of the preferential adsorption of a series of ions at different biophysically relevant interfaces and determine their influence on the interfacial water structure. The experimental results will play a key role in endorsing, disproving or suggesting changes to the emerging new theories on ion specific effects. The surface molecular information will be mainly obtained using advanced surface sensitive laser spectroscopy techniques, specifically Vibrational Sum Frequency. The project will involve collaboration with different research partners both in Sweden and abroad. The candidate will also be expected to participate in the collaborative writing of those high-impact papers that will summarize the results achieved.

Qualifications

Specific knowledge and experience in Vibrational Sum Frequency spectroscopy is required. Good command of the English language in both its written and spoken forms.

Experience with femtosecond laser amplifiers and Langmuir trough measurements is a merit.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a subject relevant for the research, such as surface chemistry, physical chemistry or physics.

Knowledge and experience in NMR spectroscopy will be considered a plus.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability, such as good collaboration skills and also the ability to work independently.
