KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

Job description

This is a two-year position in laser-based processing of specialty optical fibers. The research project is centered on developing new techniques to fabricate and post-process semiconductor-core glass-clad optical fibers. For examples of our previous work, see [Nat Commun. 2019; 10: 1790: doi: 10.1038/s41467-019-09835-1] and [Advanced Optical Materials, 4: 1004-1008: doi:10.1002/adom.201500784].

Semiconductor-core fibers, integrating the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors within a long flexible optical fiber geometry, is an emerging research field with numerous potential applications in photonics and optoelectronics due to large nonlinear optical coefficients and an extended transparency window. The successful candidate for this position will be involved in both preform and fiber fabrication, as well as laser-based post-processing of semiconductor-core fibers. The main activities will be to set up a small experimental tower for drawing optical fibers.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with outstanding experimental skills, having proven expertise in designing and building complex experimental equipment and systems. Previous experience in fiber fabrication and fiber drawing is beneficial. The successful candidate will likely have a background in Applied Physics, Photonics or related fields, having previous experience working with class 4 lasers. Familiarity with optical- and materials characterization techniques are desirable.

The candidate should be ambitious and collaborative, organized and self-motivated, capable of working independently as well as in a fast-paced group atmosphere. The candidate must have received the PhD within the last three years.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
