KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design, situated at the Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering within the School of Engineering Sciences, performs multidisciplinary research in order to enable resource efficient vehicle design in the future. Our main research focus is on the vehicle as part of the wider transport system, taking into account requirements set on all system levels. The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design collects a broad competence within the fields of vehicle concepts, lightweight structures, sound and vibrations, vehicle aerodynamics, rail vehicle technology and road vehicle dynamics.

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design is a close collaboration with the Swedish based vehicle industry and more information regarding the Centre and the partners can be found at the website www.eco2vehicledesign.kth.se.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Vehicle and maritime engineering

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design is now looking for a PhD-student in Driving simulator development to enable evaluation of future innovative vehicle concepts that are based on disruptive technologies.

The high level architecture of road vehicles is expected to change in an increasingly rapid pace in future due to the introduction of new propulsion systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It is important to understand how this affects the driving and riding experience and how the chassis and control systems should be designed to meet the requirements of future mobility. Lacking experience and historical data on similar concepts makes it difficult to determine design requirements only with analytical methods.

Driving simulators can be used to address these limitations by allowing subjective evaluations of almost any vehicle configuration in a safe environment, to identify desired behaviours and develop design requirements. However, the calibration of existing motion control systems for driving simulators rely heavily on comparing the experience in the simulator with an identical or similar physical vehicle. This means that it is not possible to assume correlation for vehicles or scenarios that are too different from those used for validation.

The aim of this project is to develop objective methods for validation of the motion perception as well as a motion cueing software for vehicle simulators that is correlated over a wider range of use cases than traditional algorithms, enabling evaluation of future innovative vehicle concepts based on disruptive technology.

The work is part of the activities within the ECO2 Vehicle Design environment, www.eco2vehicledesign.kth.se, and is performed in collaboration with industrial partners involved in the Centre.

For this position it is required to have a Master of Science in Vehicle Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
