The department of Electric Power and Energy Systems belongs to the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Its research and education cover all aspects of the electric power system including electricity markets, power generation, transmission and distribution, grid intelligence, automation and control as well as electric transportation, electric machines and power electronics.
The department consists of 20 faculty, researchers and affiliated faculty who together with around 50 Doctoral students and affiliated researchers contribute to a high professional standard of intensive work and quality results, as well as to a friendly and open environment. The staff has a multicultural background and the working language is English. The department is internationally well established, has many research collaborations with excellent partners worldwide, and is involved in several European and national projects.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
Wind power production may be introduced via power electronics. Off-shore wind power may be connected to shore via HVDC transmission. Photovoltaic solar power is connected to the grid via inverters. The intermittent nature of many renewable resources may imply a need for long distance transmission via HVDC for the purpose of balancing the power production over larger geographical areas. Similarly, renewable energy sources may lead to a need for energy storage solutions which may be provided via power electronics. All those connections via power electronics will result in a power system with low short circuit power, inertia and synchronizing torque which can lead to a series of challenges for a secure power system operation.
The main focus of this project is on monitoring and predicting of rotor angle instability based on real-time measurements of the rotor angles of generators.
