Job description
The position is announced in connection to the KTH Digitalization platform pilot project “Earth Observation Big Data and Deep Learning for Change Detection and Environmental Impact Assessment: Urbanization and Forest Fire Monitoring as Examples“. The work will be a collaboration between various divisions at KTH: RPL (Josephine Sullivan, Hossein Azizpour), GeoInformatics (Yifang Ban, Andrea Nascetti), and Sustainability Assessment and Management (Ulla Mörtberg). The position is short-term (3 months, with possible extension to 6 months) to work on a research project involving deep learning on satellite imagery for continuous change detection and segmentation.
The outcome of the position would be a scientific report and the corresponding documented code. The research results are expected to be published at top machine learning/computer vision/geoinformatics venues with the research engineer as the main author. The position is expected to start in early August.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has taken courses in machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision and has extensive experience with deep learning. The position requires the development of deep learning software in a deep learning framework such as TensorFlow or PyTorch. Thus, familiarity and prior research experience with deep networks is a must. At the early stages, this project involves parsing satellite imagery data with large volumes which require good programming (C/C++ and Python) and database skills. Finally, the candidate is required to have enough proficiency with Linux shell scripting in order to smoothly run jobs on GPU servers remotely. Ideally, the student should have an MSc degree or should be about to finish his/her master thesis before starting this position.
