KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Machine Design

Our research aims at the development of new lubrication technologies to enhance e-mobility. The demands on lubricants for increased energy efficiency and sustainability in “green” electric machinery are escalating. To develop more efficient solutions and expand the operational window of lubricants, we use novel ionic materials. The goal is to understand lubrication mechanisms of novel types of lubricants to control friction and decrease wear. The technology can also bring additional functionality such as in-situ friction control.

Lubricated contacts of gears and bearings will be modelled and studied by using our research facilities. A range of equipment will also be used to analyse surfaces and lubricant properties. The research is part of a multidisciplinary project, which will link synthesis, simulations, physical chemistry and tribology, www.ionicmaterials.se. This project is carried out in a close collaboration with industry and supported by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and the Swedish Energy Agency.
