KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science

The TCS group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, https://www.kth.se/tcs, has vacancies for one PhD student in System Security and Formal Methods.

We are looking for a highly motivated student interested in building secure system components, constructing models at system and component (HW and SW) level, as well as building and using various types of automated and semi-automated tools for verification and analysis.

Our project aims to develop techniques for analysing non-functional properties of complex systems and to design system software and kernels that support end-to-end predictable computing for several untrusted tenants. These goals will require to work in four dimensions:

1) extend existing execution platforms with support for strong timing isolation, enabling predictable performance of software components and preventing side-channels.

2) model processors and design binary analysis tools with support for concurrency.

3) design, implement, and verify new mechanisms to securely share peripherals among untrusted tenants.

4) implement a trustworthy 5G subsystem that provides network slicing, where two distrusting tenants share two hosts and compete for the same network resources. This system will be used demonstrate the effectiveness of the analyses techniques and software designs

This position is funded by WASP-AS, https://wasp-sweden.org, which is a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment in autonomous systems and software development. Within WASP-AS, our group is part of the Security for Autonomous Systems project cluster, which investigates security and privacy research challenges that arise from advances in autonomous systems.
