KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemical Engineering

The main goal of the project is to study chemical reactions at model and real surfaces to gain fundamental and applied insights which are important to bridge the pressure gap in catalyst R&D. The research work is largely multi-experimental including 1) spectroscopic and surface science tools, such as XPS, combined with DFT modelling; 2) the design, construction and use of a new instrument, combining molecular beams, laser spectroscopy and ion imaging detection technology; 3) catalytic active materials in real applications and investigation of catalytic activity in lab-scale reactors. Information gained in the multi-experimental work from fundamentals to applications will enhance the understanding of reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and other processes of importance for catalyst development.

The research work will mainly be carried out at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Process Technology offering a stimulating environment with opportunities to play a leading role in fundamental to applied research collaborating both within the department, KTH and externally. Examples of collaborating partners are Material Physics at KTH and Chemical Physics at Stockholm University.

The project lies on the borders between physical chemistry, experimental physics, and chemical engineering, and could suit a student with any of these backgrounds. A Masters degree in a suitable field, good English language skills are required. An interest and experience from of the following areas would be desired and advantageous: ultrahigh vacuum techniques, instrument development, laser spectroscopy, reaction kinetics and dynamics, mass spectrometry and catalyst characterisation.

What we offer

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

Interest and experiences of experimental work within surface science and its applications is an advantage

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
