Project description
Third-cycle subject: Solid Mechanics
Solid Mechanics is a classic engineering science discipline, ranging from basic to applied science. The topic can be regarded as a link between materials science and applied mechanics with emphasis on the latter. Solid Mechanics deals with the mechanical properties of materials and structures. The research at the department is focused on computational methods, fracture mechanics, composite mechanics, contact mechanics, mechanics of materials, paper mechanics and fatigue. A primary objective of the research is to develop methods for reliable design of structures, materials, systems and processes.
The Department of Solid Mechanics offers a Ph.D.-position oriented towards the development of models for fracture mechanical properties in homogeneous and heterogeneous steels which are exposed to elevated temperatures during extended periods of time of operation and simultaneously subjected to environmental effects. The research is fundamental and involves theoretical aspects, numerical analysis and verification by experimental work. It is interdisciplinary with connections to material science as microstructural changes that influences fracture properties will be investigated, where both brittle and ductile failure mechanisms will be considered.
The doctoral student will be supervised by researchers from Solid Mechanics with strong backgrounds in Fracture Mechanics and Material science, and from the nuclear industry, but also collaborate with younger researchers in ongoing related projects. Fracture properties affected by ageing phenomena is a severe problem to be handled in many industrial applications, as for instance in process and aerospace industry.
The employment is limited to five years including up to 20 % departmental duties (mainly teaching assistant at tutorials and laboratory works).
